A fusible plug is a safety device used in boilers and pressure vessels to prevent overheating and potential explosions. It is a threaded plug made of a material with a low melting point, such as tin, lead, or a eutectic alloy, inserted into a boiler drum, fire tube, or other pressure-containing equipment.

Function:

The fusible plug melts when the temperature inside the boiler or vessel exceeds safe limits (usually due to low water levels or excessive heat). Once the plug melts, it releases pressure or steam, acting as a warning and safety measure to reduce the risk of explosion by preventing further heat buildup.

Applications:

• Steam Boilers: In steam boilers, fusible plugs are often used to ensure that water levels are sufficient. If the water level drops and exposes the fusible plug, it will melt, allowing steam to escape and alerting operators of a dangerous situation.
• Locomotives: Historically, fusible plugs were used in steam locomotives to prevent catastrophic failure from boiler overheating.

Material:

The material of the fusible element is selected based on the required melting point, typically between 180°C and 350°C, depending on the boiler's operating pressure and temperature.
